Qingdao is right on the water.. it is known for it’s seafood.  I mean, it’s known to me and people that are interested in food, for it’s seafood.. For a historian, or for a traveler, i am sure it’s known for lots of other things. For me, I know about the Tsingtao Beer, i know that it has some connection to Germany but, really, i know about the seafood.   There is a spectacular selection in the city and I am a seafood guy.. Big fan of Qingdao cuisine.

I love celery.. This dish was cold celery with sesame oil and these little shrimp.  really awesome. the quality of all the seafood in Qingdao is pretty awesome..

Did everyone else think yesterday was tuesday? Arrived home last night to find out a friend was coming to dinner. It was 630, she was arriving at 7. I had fortunately purchased food for dinner so, we just made more. Originally, I was making salmon steaks and some mussel dish but, there was not enough salmon to serve as steaks. We made a quick salmon ravioli. Grilled the salmon, pulled it, wrung in a towel to dry, mixed with a little egg and some goat cheese.

25 Burgers
510 E St Georges Ave
Linden, NJ 07036
(908) 718-5671

Named 25 burgers after the 25 different burgers they offer, it’s a seriously good burger.  I am trying to think of when I had a better burger in recent memory..  Now, I understand, everyone has their personal favorites, some like thin and smashed, some like a nice big bar burger, this was kind of like a mix between the two.. It was super juicy, needing many napkins.. It was dressed kind of like a Cali Burger and definitely needed to be wrapped up.. Buns were hearty yet, super soft.. Loved the bun.

I ordered a bacon burger it had a ton of bacon.

Burgers came out fairly quickly, seasoned fries.. Staff was super nice. I am a huge fan.

Upstate this weekend in a lovely home in the woods, we were able to spend a lot of time hanging out and relaxing around the house.

Here we have a fritatta made from leftover chicken from the night before. There is also some guanciale and left over spinach and bacon that got tossed in to the mix. This was a 13 egg fritatta.

With the leftover rice, I made some arancini from two nights ago. it was a saffron Carolina rice. On certain days in the local grocery, if you buy 100 dollars worth of groceries, they sell you a 20 pound bag of rice for 2 bucks or something. We have so much damn rice.. i just added an egg and some mozzarella. served with this really bright tomato sauce

Cow Girl Seahorse

259 Front St, New York, NY

info@cowgirlseahorse.com

Located in the South Street Seaport in space of the former horror show Mexican Radio, I was invited to meet for lunch here this weekend by a buddy of mine. Now my friend has wonderful taste in restaurants, music, and just in general. He is a master jeweler, studied in Italy for a few years honing his craft. Needless to say, when he picks a restaurant I am happy to oblige.

So, this weekend, my buddy calls me on the phone and tells me to meet him down here.   I hope on the g train and do not give it a second thought.  That is, until I walked past one of my favorite haunts, Jeremy’s Ale House.  I could go on for pages on how much I love Jeremy’s.  It’s a dive for sure. But, the memories I have there are amazing. Not to mention, they have a deep fryer and they are not afraid to use it. Their fried shrimp and calamari were a Thursday ritual for us.  I say a ritual because, this is also where my old bookie use to do pick ups and drop offs as well.

So, I walk passed Jeremy’s, I walk passed a place called Bin something or other, I walk passed a bunch of really cool looking places. I finally arrive at this strangely named place, Cow Girl Seahorse Tavern. I see the nautical gitchyness, the huge seahorse, the place is empty but, it will soon be packed with young kids and strollers and I am getting really nervous. I am the first to arrive so, I sit at the bar and get myself a beer.  It’s noon, it’s Sunday, it’s all very respectable.

Le Perrada de Chilache
940 Elizabeth Ave
Elizabeth, NJ 07201
(908) 629-9692

Thanks to Mr. Rail for the suggestion.

Literally translated it means a pack of dogs.. But, in the terms of restaurants, it’s a Spanish Hot Dogeria.. There are several of these Perradas popping up now around NY.. A big chain of over a 100 strong out of Columbia has recently landed in Queens I think..

So, On a beautiful afternoon, I decided to head on over and see what was doing..

On top of hot dogs, they have several items on the menu. Chorizo, Arepas, fried chicken, hambugers, and polla a la brasa.. But, today, we came for the hot dogs..

Here is a chorizo con arepa.. I was expecting something completely different.. But the chorizo was a wonderful garlicky sausage..

My dad, who was rolling with me today, went for the super Hot Dog.. This was a foot long bady boy with shredded chicken, potato chips, russian dressing, and ketchup.. A pretty bold move for the guy.. I was expecting him to go grilled chicken sandwich…

Here you have hot dog, then shredded chicken, then a crumbled potato chip layer, then ketchup, then ketchup mayo dressing.

Was out and about today. We covered close to 7 miles on our walk.  We went to the Brooklyn Museum to check out the Keith Haring Exhibit.  While I was impressed with the museum, the Haring collection was not all that exciting. Lots of black and whites and a few on canvas. It seemed to be all the same thing.
